Message The OBDII is an ecu thing. Swap out to a non-OBDII ecu and your car is no longer OBDII. The Supra's do this all the time.... they put 93-95 ecu's into the 97-98 supra's.

Now timing... yes the initial (idle) timing may be different, but the timing RANGE is the same. The ecu just controls the range of the timing... raises it and lowers it from it's initial setting. This is why no matter what your initial timing is set to it always reads 15 degree's at idle (after the car is warmed up) on a Techtom because the ecu can't actually read what the timing is set at... it assumes an initial timing of 15 degree's and makes adjustments off of it.

Now VTC... I know for a fact a 90-95 ecu does not lock into safety boost or anything if it does not detect the VTC solenoids connected. I disconnected mine several times on my 95TT and the car ran fine. So if you install a 90-95 ecu into a 96 that is not a problem.

96's have the 2 extra O2 sensors... but because the 90-95 ecu isn't looking for it then just dont hook them up.

Now the only other thing that I can think of that could be a problem is if Nissan redesigned the end of the 96 wiring harness so that the wires aren't in the same configuration as in the 90-95 wiring harness... but a simple comparision of 90-95 and 96 wiring diagrams out of a couple of service manuals should answer that question. I really think that this could work...
